SRU Athletes continued their success in '94-95!

#

w,

hetlier bringing home ( ihampionships or
struggling through a year of growth, every
Salve athletic team of 1994-95 possessed the
competitive fire that made them a feared
opponent throughout the region.

Thanks to the lead provided by Athletic
Director Lynn Sheedy and her staff of top-notch
coaches, every SRU athlete was well prepared
to battle on the fields, courts, and ice rinks of
New England. Newer programs like football
and field hockey continued to flourish and
gather momentum, while the long winning tra-
ditions of teams like tennis and soccer
remained intact.

The athletes and coaches depicted on the
following pages gave their all in 1994-95, with
Seniors providing the leadership and experi-
ence that breeds success. Congratulations, all!

Heroes

Salve Regina's rapidly growing
reputation as a Division III football
powerhouse was given another
boost in the 1994 season, as the
team was once again among the
Conference leaders. Head Coach
Tim Coen has built one of the most
respected programs in the region in
only three years, and the team is
loaded with young talent that
bodes well for the future.

The big news in '94 was junior Ron
Contreras, who gained All America
and All-ECAC honors with an out-
standing season as a defensive
back and punt return specialist.

Multi-sport participants Scott
Kopecky and Rich Ptaszek were
honored with Senior Scholar Athlete
Awards for their performance on
the field and in the classroom.

Field Hockey Wins Fans

In only its third year of
existence, the SRU Field
Hockey began to establish
itself as a sport with more
than its share of talent and
fans on campus. Head
Coach Sarah Kendall and
Assistant Coach Jodi Aissis
have managed to develop
a program that remains
competitive with the best
that the Commonwealth
Coast Conference has to
offer.

The 1994 Field Hockey
team remained a young
squad, bidding farewell to
only one graduating senior,
Elizabeth Smither. With the
leadership that experience
brings, Coach Kendall
should have an even bet-
ter squad in '95.

For the sixth straight year, the
Salve Regina University women's

the outstanding play of Sophomore

sole loss of the year came in a Sep-
tember 29 meeting with Connecti-

Caulfield and Pitrone captured
the #1 and #2 Singles Flight Champi-

Student Life at Salve Signifies Plenty!

L

ife is what happens to us while we
are making other plans.

- Thomas La Mance

At perhaps no other time is Thomas
La Mance's axiom about life more
appropriate than while one is in col-
lege. For even though college students
are making plans and preparing for the
future, they still manage to always find
time to live life to the fullest. And among
college students, nobody goes for the
gusto more than Seniors. Whether it's
day or night, on campus or off, indoors
or out, college Seniors always seem to
be able to squeeze every ounce of fun
out of any given situation.

The following pages are dedicated
to the fun times we had at Salve Regina
and the good friends with which we
shared them. Though we may lose
touch after graduation, we'll always be
linked by the memories which are pre-
served in the photos on the pages that
follow.

by Carrie Maillet, Assistant Editor

wo special events high-
lighted the fall semester
at Salve this year. On
September 10, Greg
Brady visited Salve as
part of the Welcome
Back Weekend festivities. OK,
his name's not really Greg
Brady, it's Barry Williams, but
who remembers that? What
we remember is a Greg
Brady with step-sisters who
were three very lovely girls
with hair of gold ... like their
mother; a Greg Brady with a

housekeeper named Alice
and a dog named Tiger; a
Greg Brady who was wicked
groovy.

Williams kept the crowd
laughing throughout the
evening, recanting inside sto-
ries about backstage antics
and off-screen pranks
among our favorite TV family.
He even brought audience
members onstage to teach
them the Brady Shuffle, then
graciously signed auto-
graphs after the show.
Thanks, Greg!

Later in the month, SRU stu-

dents offered their own cele-
bration of the inauguration of
Sr. M. Therese Antone as
Salve's sixth President by
staging a luau on the
grounds of the Boathouse.
The event included authentic
Hawaiian cuisine, live reggae
music, and a hot tub. Howev-
er, the climax of the day
came when the three stu-
dent Senates and Sigma Phi
Sigma presented Sr. Therese
with The Giving Well. Placed

and Meeting Faculty

On Saturday, September 24,
the second annual Fall Family Day
was held on the SRU campus. The
event, which drew over 600 peo-
ple to campus, offered a slate of
sports and activities for students'
families to enjoy, including hay
rides, Family Feud, and a free con-
cert.

Much later in the semester —
December 7 to be exact — Fresh-
men and faculty met and min-
gled at a reception held in Ochre
Court. Freshman Class President
Matt Schaefer and his fellow offi-
cers greeted guests at the door,
while Music Department Chair-
man Peter Davis and his student
jazz ensemble provided the musi-
cal accompaniment. Well-
attended by both students and
teachers, the Freshman/Faculty
Reception capped an impressive
first semester for the Class of 1 998.

On Sunday, October 30, the

transformed into the Wakehurst

Newport, and the Yuletide Season
of 1994 was no exception. Here on
campus, students, staff, and faculty
got into the Christmas spirit at the
Holly Dinner in the Miley Cafeteria.
Easily the best meal students will get
all year on campus, the Holly Dinner
has become one of the most popu-
lar traditions at SRU.

Following the meal, many stu-
dents made the trek over to the
Wakehurst Campus Center for the
annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Dr.
Christopher Kiernan, whose father
donated the trees, spoke before
those gathered, and then came the
lighting itself. Santa Claus, bearing a
remarkable resemblance to Fresh-
man Class President Matt Schaefer,
also put in an appearance, gather-
ing the wish lists of Salve students.
Santa was heard to ask many times,
"How do you spell Porsche?"

he need a Heimlich?

mony.

Santa had already been warned
twice that if he didn 't wear a hair
net the cafeteria management
would be forced to take radical
corrective action.

Under His Spell

Hypnotist Frank Santos returned to Salve
Regina for the fourth year in a row on Octo-
ber 18th, drawing his largest crowd ever to
the TB Room in O'Hare Academic Center.
Leading twelve hypnotized Salve students
through a series of stunts and scenarios,
Santos kept the audience in hysterics
throughout the 90 minute show.

Only 200 days, ladies, Do you think
you can make it?

Vern (a.k.a. Jerri Carvealle),
moonlighting as John Travolta,

Much to his surprise, Kenny wakes up to find himself at

Seniors Start the
Countdown at Fall Days
Parties.

In the fall semester, Commencement
seemed so far away, However, Seniors
managed to get into the graduation spirit
by celebrating with their classmates at the
first two Days Parties of the year.

The 200 Days Party was held at Senor
Frogg's in Newport, while the 1 75 Days Party
brought hoards of Salve Seniors to Bobby
Valentine's Sports Pub in Middletown. At
both of these gatherings, Seniors took the
opportunity to relieve academic pressures
and live it up.

Semi-Formal Packs 'Em In Again!

Hundreds
jam Ochre
Court to dance
the night awaj

Christina Sempepos and Melissa
Cordone of the Student Life Senate -
greet guests at the door.

he annual New Year's
Semi-Formal once again
got the Spring Semester
off to a rousing start, as
four hundred and ninety-
four people squeezed
into Ochre Court to enjoy
the event.
The video dance party, a first-
ever at Salve, proved quite pop-
ular with those in attendance.
The dance floor was a shifting,
rumbling mass of bodies in
motion from start to finish.

When not busting moves to
the music and videos, however,
attendees took advantage of
the full service juice bar, an

array of hot and cold hors
d'ouvres, and a selection of
Newport Creamery's finest ice
cream. At midnight, the dance
floor was showered with bal-
loons as Salve officially ushered
in 1995.

Though tickets cost only $5,
there was obviously quite a bit
more spent on the attire for the
evening. Black velvet dresses
dominated the fashion choices,
with satin a distant second.

The 1995 Semi-Formal was
sponsored by the Student Life
Senate, Student Housing Sen-
ate, Student Academic Senate,
and Student Alumni Ambas-
sadors.

Students brave un-springlike temperatures to enjoy ...

Spring Weekend '95

Despite temperatures
that led one to think of
anything but spring, a
great crowd turned out for the
most elaborate Spring Week-
end in memory. In addition to
the traditional cookout, stu-
dents had the opportunity to
try their hands at the Bungee
Run, Dunk Tank, Joust and
Velcro Wall.

The Battle of the Bands
Competition, featuring Man-
dala, Johnny Orange Peel,
Max Damian, and eventual
champion Soul Food, man-
aged to heat up the stage
area with great perfor-
mances. Also —judging by the
line that formed at the Fortune

Teller's table — SRU is home to
more than a few members of
the Psychic Friends Network.

For the first time ever, ven-
dors were invited on campus
to display their wares, and
proved a very popular feature
with those in attendance. Fra-
grances, gift items, clothing,
and cassettes were among
the more popular merchan-
dise available.

Event Chairperson Christina
Sempepos spearheaded the
planning for the Student Life
Senate and Activities Office.
Shortly after the event, SLS
elected Ms. Sempepos Presi-
dent of that organization for
the 1995-96 school year.

Conducting Class

The SRU faculty get rave reviews for their performance!

D

espite our diverse backgrounds and person-
alities, the members of the Class of 1995 all had
one thing in common: We came to Salve Regina to
learn. With the help of the talented and caring
professionals depicted on the following pages, we
did just that.

Each of us can look back and recall one or two
special teachers who made a big difference in our
personal growth. Perhaps it was the enthusiasm
with which they taught, or the extra help they
offered after class, or simply the example they set
as scholars and individuals. Maybe it was even that
kick in the pants when we needed it.

Regardless of the method, though, the faculty of
SRI) has shaped and affected us in ways which we
can only begin to fathom now as we look back on
our years in Newport. For that, we thank them.

IS Senior Life

For 4 years, the Class of '95 lived life to the fullest!

T

hough all of our years at Salve have provided
us with special memories that will never fade
away, there are none quite so vivid as those from
our Senior year. We spent every last penny we had,
then happily charged our way through the rest of
the year. Because we knew we had such limited
time remaining with the many friends we had
made, every night out on the town was just a little
bit more special.

Now, as we look back on that final year in New-
port, each of ns can easily bring to mind those vivid
memories of parties, road trips, and graduation
itself. Those experiences have helped to make us
who we are today.

Many of those memories are preserved in the
photographs on the pages that follow. Many more,
however, are preserved in our hearts and minds
forever.

Thank You,
Sue Belsito!

Without you, there wouldn't have been a yearbook,
Senior Wine Tasting, or Senior Boat Cruise for the Class of '95.
Thanks for always getting the job done — you're the best.

Tuesdays and Thursdays just won't be the same without
you and Chris. Who's gonna eat all the food left over from
events now? Who's gonna make me bury my head under
the table while they get asked out? Replacing you guys cer-
tainly won't be easy ...

Congratulations and best wishes for the future. And —
again — thank you.

IHILU

There are no words to express,

No actions to explain

There is nothing we can do

Nothing we could have done

We can only say thank you,

And feel we were blessed

For the time we shared together,

And the memories we will hold forever.
